Abel, Niels H. (1802 - 1829) " If you disregard the very simplest cases, there is in all of mathematics not a single infinite series whose sum has been rigorously determined. In other words, the most important parts of mathematics stand without a foundation. " In G. F. Simmons, Calculus Gems, New York: Mcgraw Hill, Inc., 1992, p. 188. |
[A reply to a question about how he got his expertise:] By studying the masters and not their pupils.
Adams, Douglas (1952 - 2001) Bistromathics itself is simply a revolutionary new way of understanding the behavior of numbers. Just as Einstein observed that space was not an absolute but depended on the observer's movement in space, and that time was not an absolute, but depended on the observer's movement in time, so it is now realized that numbers are not absolute, but depend on the observer's movement in restaurants. Life, the Universe and Everything. New York: Harmony Books, 1982. |

Guided only by their feeling for symmetry, simplicity, and generality, and an indefinable sense of the fitness of things, creative mathematicians now, as in the past, are inspired by the art of mathematics rather than by any prospect of ultimate usefulness. |
Bernoulli, Johann But just as much as it is easy to find the differential of a given quantity, so it is difficult to find the integral of a given differential. Moreover, sometimes we cannot say with certainty whether the integral of a given quantity can be found or not. |

Bolyai, Wolfgang (1775-1856) [To son Janos:] For God's sake, please give it up. Fear it no less than the sensual passion, because it, too, may take up all your time and deprive you of your health, peace of mind and happiness in life. [Bolyai's father urging him to give up work on non-Euclidian geometry.] In P. Davis and R. Hersh The Mathematical Experience , Boston: Houghton Mifflin Co., 1981, p. 220. |
Butler, Samuel (1612 - 1680) ... There can be no doubt about faith and not reason being the ultima ratio. Even Euclid, who has laid himself as little open to the charge of credulity as any writer who ever lived, cannot get beyond this. He has no demonstrable first premise. He requires postulates and axioms which transcend demonstration, and without which he can do nothing. His superstructure indeed is demonstration, but his ground his faith. Nor again can he get further than telling a man he is a fool if he persists in differing from him. He says "which is absurd," and declines to discuss the matter further. Faith and authority, therefore, prove to be as necessary for him as for anyone else. The Way of All Flesh. |

Cardano, Girolamo (1501 - 1576) To throw in a fair game at Hazards only three-spots, when something great is at stake, or some business is the hazard, is a natural occurrence and deserves to be so deemed; and even when they come up the same way for a second time if the throw be repeated. If the third and fourth plays are the same, surely there is occasion for suspicion on the part of a prudent man. De Vita Propria Liber. |

Chebyshev To isolate mathematics from the practical demands of the sciences is to invite the sterility of a cow shut away from the bulls. In G. Simmons, Calculus Gems, New York: Mcgraw Hill, Inc., 1992, page 198. |
Two wrongs don't make a right?but three lefts do. :D |

"Mathematics is the queen of science and the thoery of number is the queen of mathematics." |
David Hilbert
"Siegel came to Göttingen as a student in 1919... he was always to remember a lecture on number theory which he heard from Hilbert at this time. Hilbert wanted to give his listeners examples of the characteristic problems of the theory of numbers which seem at first glance so very simple but turn out to be incredibly difficult to solve. He mentioned Riemann's hypothesis, Fermat's [Last] theorem, and the transcendence of $2^{\sqrt2}$ as examples of this type of problem. Then he went on to say that there had recently been much progress on Riemann's hypothesis and he was very hopeful that he would live to see it proved. Fermat's problem had been around for a very long time and apparently demanded entirely new methods for its solution - perhaps the youngest members of his audience would live to see it solved. But as for establishing the transcendence of $2^{\sqrt2}$ no one present in the lecture hall would live to see that! The first two problems which Hilbert mentioned are still unsolved. But less than ten years later a young Russian mathematician named Gelfond established the transcendence of $2^{\sqrt{-2}}$. Utilising this work, Siegel himself was shortly able to establish the desired transcendence of $2^{\sqrt2}$. Siegel wrote to Hilbert about the proof. He reminded him of what he had said in his 1920 lecture and emphasised that the important work was that of Gelfond. Hilbert was frequently criticized for "acting as if everything had been done in Göttingen." Now he responded with enthusiastic delight to Siegel's letter, but he made no mention of the young Russian's contribution. He wanted only to publish Siegel's solution. Siegel refused, certain that Gelfond himself would eventually solve this problem too. Hilbert immediately lost all interest in the matter." |
Noam Elkies
อันนี้เป็นวาทะของ number theorist ชื่อดัง Noam Elkies คนที่พิสูจน์ว่าสมการ Diophantine $a^4+b^4+c^4=d^4$ มีคำตอบ (primitive solution, i.e., $\gcd(a,b,c)=1$) อยู่เป็นอนันต์
"The silliest proof I know of the infinitude of primes is to fix one such integer $s$, and observe that if there were finitely many primes then $$\zeta(s) = \prod_{p\, \rm{prime}} \left( 1-\frac{1}{p^s} \right)^{-1}\quad,$$ and thus also $\pi^s$, would be rational, contradicting Lindemann’s theorem (1882) that $\pi$ is transcendental. It is only a bit less silly to take $s = 2$ and use the irrationality of $\pi^2$, which though unknown to Euler was proved a few generations later by Legendre (1794?)." |
Harry Vandiver
"This question seems to be of such a character that if I should come to life any time after my death and some mathematician were to tell me it had been definitely settled, I think I would immediately drop dead again." |
Paul Erdős
"Imagine an alien force, vastly more powerful than us landing on Earth and demanding the value of $R(5,5)$ or they will destroy our planet. In that case, we should marshal all our computers and all our mathematicians and attempt to find the value. But suppose, instead, that they asked for $R(6,6)$, we should attempt to destroy the aliens." |
G. H. Hardy
"There are just four numbers, after unity, which are the sums of the cubes of their digits: $153 = 1^3 + 5^3 + 3^3$ $370 = 3^3 + 7^3 + 0^3$ $371 = 3^3 + 7^3 + 1^3$ and $407 = 4^3 + 0^3 + 7^3$. These are odd facts, very suitable for puzzle columns and likely to amuse amateurs, but there is nothing in them which appeals to the mathematician |
