Let $\scr{C}$ be a collection of subsets. Let $\scr{A}(\scr{C})$ be the algebra generated by $\scr{C}$ (i.e. $\scr{A}(\scr{C})$ = $\cap_{A \in \Gamma} A$ where $\Gamma$ is a family of algebra containing $\scr{C}$). Then $$\scr{A}(\scr{C}) = \{\sqcup_{i=1}^n (\cap_{j=1}^{m_j} A_{i, j}) : \ \mbox{either} A_{i,j} \ \mbox{or} \ A_{i,j}^c \in \scr{C} \ \mbox{for all} \ i,j\}.$$
($\sqcup$ denote disjoint union, i.e., $A \sqcap B = A \cup B$ with $A \cap B = \phi$)
ให้ $G = \{\sqcup_{i=1}^n (\cap_{j=1}^{m_j} A_{i, j}) : \ \mbox{either} A_{i,j} \ \mbox{or} \ A_{i,j}^c \in \scr{C} \ \mbox{for all} \ i,j\}$ จะเห็นได้ชัดเจนว่า $\scr{C} \subseteq$ $G$ ดังนั้น ถ้าแสดงได้ว่า $G$ เป็น algebra ก็จะได้ว่า $G = \scr{A}(\scr{C})$
ให้ $A \in G$ จะแสดงว่า $A^c \in G$
